If there was ever a case to ‘be prepared’ it is for the annual Tall Ships’ competition organised by Sail Training International! This year four ships out of the current total of 40 from the UK will be crewed by 15-25 year olds from the Northumberland Scouts who will sail the second leg of the race between Kristiansand in Norway and Hartlepool between 29th July and 7th August.
The scouts have already been in training for a year to prepare themselves for the conditions that they might experience on the 432 miles that divide Norway from Teesside. Many of the forty 15- 18 year olds participating have never sailed before and are under-going the intensity of training (including a North Sea Survival Course) that is normally reserved for oil rig workers. It’s training that’s essential – in 2005 one of the teams spent seven days at a 45% angle; endured on-board fires and a gale force eight with five to six metre waves – and still managed to come in fifth.
The crews are now coming to the end of two-years of fundraising and are looking for the final contributions that will help them reach their £80,000 fundraising target. "In conversation with... Chris Eldridge and Matt Weatherley" from the Northumberland Scouts will bring the Tall Ships challenge to life. They will be seeking your support for the work of the 35,000 scouts and their leaders across the north east region.
If you want to find out more about the Tall Ships race, experience what it’s like to be on board a sailing boat in ‘the last great wilderness’; meet some of the scouts who raced in 2005; learn about the sponsorship opportunities at the Hartlepool celebrations and meet scouts participating in this year’s challenge...this conversation is for you! This event will take place on Tuesday 30th March, 6pm - 8.30pm at Brewin Dolphin, Newcastle upon Tyne
